FOR ONLY THE second time since the inception of the British Book Awards in 1990, Faber & Faber was this week named KPMG Publisher of the Year at this year's 2006 British Book Trade Awards, presented at the closing dinner of the BA Conference in Bournemouth. The win comes as the publisher announced a stellar performance, with sales up 25% for the year ending 31 March 2006. Among the highlights: P D James novel The Lighthouse, Alan Bennett's Untold Stories (published jointly with Profile), and Ricky Gervais' Flanimals.
Meanwhile, Profile Books - a key member of the Faber-led Alliance sales and marketing initiative - was named joint winner of the Lightning Source Small Publisher of the Year. The company previously outright won in 2004 but this year shared the laurels with SnowBooks, a company founded just three years ago by Emma Barnes, whose involvement could be said to define the term 'hands-on'.

There was a second honour for Profile, with publicist Benjamin Usher winning the Nibbie for Midas Public Relations Publicity Campaign of the Year. Other winners included Wenlock Books (Aurum Press Independent Bookseller of the Year), Borders UK (Bowker UK Bookselling Company of the Year) and Amazon.co.uk (Harlequin Mills & Boon Non-Traditional Bookseller of the Year). Mark Lucas was named Orion Publishing Group Literary Agent of the Year, while Susan Howe was named Frankfurt Book Fair Rights Professional of the Year.
